What to say to your "friends" who are being uncool about the whole banning a people thing

4:17 AM

As we ride the wake of POTUS' newest Executive Order - "Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States" - there's a LOT going on. From students being stranded at airports instead of starting their new semester, to parents and children being stranded on either side of airport security detail. From airport lawyers to Federal judges... I've been hearing a lot of "but Obama did it," to rebut the disaster that is the Executive Order. First, and maybe it's just me, but now seems like a weird time, and this seems like a weird way, to try and emulate President Obama. Second, if you're trying attribute the news hour to whiney-leftist-liberal "snowflake" behavior...  sorry, you're a way off the mark.

I thought in this time-warp of weirdness I'd do a little fact-checking for you. Feel free to share the following with that gal on Facebook you haven't spoken to since the 11th grade, your "I'm-not-racist-but" uncle when he comes over for dinner, or maybe, perhaps the best idea yet - just keep it in your own heart as a means to keep fighting the good fight!

WHAT TO SAY YOUR "FRIENDS" WHO ARE BEING UNCOOL ABOUT THE WHOLE BANNING A PEOPLE THING:

1. President Obama didn't ban anyone. (thanks, Obama - but seriously)

Pro-tip: If you're going to cite a document in defense of highly unconstitutional order, make sure you actually read the document.

In 2011, President Barack Obama (we miss you, Man.) signed an Executive Order that mandated that the vetting procedures undergone by refugees and those seeking what were called "Special Immigrant Visa," a Visa created by Congress specifically for those Afghans and Iraqis that helped American troops during the war - think translators, etc., be reviewed.

The 2011 order applied only to those persons applying for refuge from Iraq, and that isolated reviewed was actually based on specific and articulable intelligence about two Iraqi refugees in Kentucky. AND, may the record show that of the 130,000 Iraqi refugees admitted these were the only 2 arrested... *but that's none of my business meme here*

During the 6-month review, there was not any one month where no refugees or SIV holders were admitted into the United Stated.

Review: Delays and review, yes. Ban, no.

2. Law & Order (dun, dun)

When the 2011 Executive Order was signed it was done so after working in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security, the Justice Department (that's a blog for another day), the State, and under the advisement of intelligence agencies. POTUS' order was drafted by White House politicos and then distributed a la intraoffice memo, leaving those charged enforcing the order going: "WTF?" Further, the point of the 2011 Executive Order was to systematically improve the vetting procedures for both our national security and for those seeking refugee status - a process that generally takes between 18-24 months.

Review: "Who does this apply to?" is a good question to answer before making something a law.

3. Obama Countries

POTUS' Executive Order affects more than 130 million people in seven countries and has stranded legal residents and those on visas (think students, scientists, the people who are literally like curing cancer, and such).

The seven countries that were "listed" by the Obama Administration were actually added and/or edited to the list of countries that were removed from the Visa Waiver Program. This program permitted persons from 38 different countries to come to the United States without having to obtain Visas - something that each of those 38 countries reciprocated back to Americans travel within their boarders. The change came in the wake of the San Bernadino shooting. The amendment to the list required people from those countries to apply for visas when they previously hadn't had to, AND the Congress worked with the Administration to create a waiver for travels doing cool/awesome/important things like diplomats, global aid workers, and (dun, dun, dun) journalists.

Review: It's awkward for everyone when POTUS does read the (not-so-) fine print.
